This is a Member only event, specifically for members of the North Scottish and Highlands and Islands Branches of The Welding Institute. Other members may be able to attend should spaces become available.

Overview: Features and results achieved on wires specifically designed and produced for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing are presented.

Details and considerations are given on optimized drawing, production parameters, specific quality controls which influences unspooling, arc stability and feedability, making these wires different than conventional welding wires. Further observations are also made on the wires chemistry and its impact in both printing process properties and deposit metallurgical properties.

Then “printed wall” cases are presented, illustrating the mechanical properties, achieved. These have been done with the aim to evaluate the influence of the wall thickness, the effect on deposited material anisotropy as well as the differences and analogies with the related welding conditions.

Based on these results, wider studies are currently ongoing in order to assess the materials properties, fitting with the requirements for parts manufactured by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing.

They also make the basis for an effective proposal on a normative framework for the characterization and classification of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing filler wires.

Speaker: Francesco Ciccomascolo

Speaker Biography: Global Full Welding Solutions Manager, voestalpine Bohler Welding.

Francesco has dedicated almost his entire career to the welding industry in various manufacturing companies, acting as design engineer, welding coordinator and QA/QC manager. He joined voestalpine Böhler Welding in 2012 as global segment manager for the O&G Downstream industry sector.

Currently he is leading both the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing Global Solutions department and the Full Welding Solutions function.

He holds a Mechanical and Welding Engineer (MSc) and I.W.E. certification.
