Registration is closed

This is a Member only event, specifically for members of the Eastern Counties Branch of The Welding Institute. Other members may be able to attend should spaces become available.

Overview: In the energy industry, such as renewable, nuclear and oil & gas, structural designs often experience much scrutiny by experts before the assets are fabricated and deployed. This ensures that the risks of component failure could be minimised, ideally prevented. On the other hand, infrastructures in the water industry are often inherited from the previous local operators, and are sometimes aged over 150 years old. This is particularly true in older urban areas, such as London. Whilst most of these assets are in operation, engineers embark on a journey to ensure that they are still fit and safe for operation.

Speaker: WeeLiam Khor

Speaker Biography:  WeeLiam is a research fellow in the University of Surrey, working on the assessment of water industry assets and fracture toughness assessment of metal matrix composites. He is also a Charted Engineer, with a PhD and BEng in Mechanical Engineering.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attending this event supports your professional development.  You can claim 2 CPD points per hour for this event.  As a member of the Welding Institute you can record your CPD activity online from your membership portal.

Additional Information:

  • Registration for this event will close 24 hours before the event starts.
  • A recording of the event will be uploaded to our Membership Portal for members to view at a later date, if agreed with the speaker. A copy of the presentation slide deck will only be shared if agreed with the speaker.

A REQUEST FROM EASTERN COUNTIES BRANCH COMMITTEE

Committee membership 2021

The Branch is to hold its AGM on Wednesday 13th January 2021 after the scheduled monthly lecture. As things stand at present, this will be via Zoom.

All branch members are invited to attend the AGM, and indeed the lecture beforehand, which will be ‘Restoration of the Eclipse jet aircraft’ (which adorns the entrance to TWI) by Steve Dodds of TWI.

At the AGM we will be electing the committee for the coming year. Most of the current committee are prepared to continue for another year. However, we are always looking for new committee members from the Branch Membership to help us to reinvigorate the activities of the branch and to maintain an interesting and varied series of topics for lectures and (hopefully in the future) technical visits.

If you are keen to support the Branch and to help to provide a stimulating programme for the Members please let me know. My details are given below. Don’t worry, no one coming on to the committee will be ‘dropped in it’ and asked to take on a major role, such as treasurer or similar, at the start.

Thanks for your support
