Overview: This talk will discuss through thickness property testing of metallic materials (Z Testing), Ultrasonic testing (UT) of Weld vs. Parent material UT and Certification of materials.

Within the supply, testing, fabrication and assembly of structural components there are many opinions and ideas regarding the above points. Each level, from structural design to the purchasers and end users of the materials has a differing opinion and/or need, each anticipating something that may be different.

The discussion is to define three common issues (Z testing, UT and Certification) from a steelmakers point of view, why people get surprised at certain points and making reference to appropriate standards.

Through the talk it is to try and put perspective on issues, clarify some misconceptions, assist people to identify where there are common mismatches and signpost to helpful information.

Speaker: Eur Ing Dr. Simeon Tulip CEng MIMechE MIMMM – Sandberg LLP

Speaker Biography: Simeon has over 20 years’ experience in steel making, production, testing, product development, product fabrication and welding arena. With a Batchelors, Master and PhD in materials and welding, combined with working at several steelmaking sites in the UK and Europe, puts him in an ideal place to discuss the topics in the presentation.
