All members of the Eastern Counties Branch of The Welding Institute are invited to attend this year’s Branch AGM which will be preceded by our talk, From Albuquerque to Abington – The story behind N504EA Eclipse 500 Jet.

Many will assume that this is merely a nod to TWI Ltd's historic support for the aviation industry. However, as you will learn, there is a little more than meets the eye with ‘N504EA’…

Speaker Dr Steve Dodds, TWI Ltd Section Manager: Friction and Forge Processes

Speaker Biography After graduating from Sheffield Hallam University’s BEng Forensic Engineering course, Steve was immediately employed at the Materials and Engineering Research Institute (MERI), performing industrial failure investigations and developing advanced inspection techniques.

His subsequent Ph.D focused on developing advanced surface processing techniques for the selective surface hardening of stainless and carbide steels. Parallel with his studies, Steve provided lectures to BEng Materials Science undergraduates and arranged for TWI Young Member events.

In 2013, he became a Senior Project Leader within TWI Ltd’s Friction & Forge Processes (FFP) team, winning and delivering a broad portfolio of friction-based manufacturing R&D projects to various industries.

In 2016, Steve became Section Manager of FFP, uncovering his passion for team and technology development and allowing him to pursue Chartered Engineer status through The Welding Institute.

Annual General meeting: The AGM is an opportunity for Branch members to hear reports from the Committee on the achievements and work of the Branch over the year; to make plans for the year ahead; to review the accounts ad to elect the Committee for the next year.

The last 12 months have been unprecedented and now more than ever, Branches need to come together to provide, help support and encouragement to the membership as well as to the Institute as a whole.

Committee membership 2021

At the AGM we will be electing the committee for the coming year. Most of the current committee are prepared to continue for another year. However, we are always looking for new committee members from the Branch Membership to help us to reinvigorate the activities of the branch and to maintain an interesting and varied series of topics for lectures and (hopefully in the future) technical visits.

If you are keen to support the Branch and to help to provide a stimulating programme for the Members please let me know. My details are given below. Don’t worry, no one coming on to the committee will be ‘dropped in it’ and asked to take on a major role, such as treasurer or similar, at the start.
