The Kelpies - Art and Engineering

This is an East Midlands Branch event organised and run by our East Midlands for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview: At 30m high, the Kelpies are the World’s largest equine sculpture. Since their public opening back in April 20014, this dramatic piece of public art has become one the UK’s instantly recognisable iconic attractions. With thousands of people visiting the Falkirk site every year most are unaware of the story behind how the two enormous heads were built and how art and engineering have worked in collaboration to create a world class piece of public art. Tim Burton was involved in the project for six years and will provide an illustrated guide to the Kelpies story.

Speaker: Tim Burton (Sales Director SH Structures Ltd)

Speaker Biography: Tim Burton has over forty years of experience in the steel construction industry. Starting his career in the 70’s as a Land Surveyor before moving into engineering and construction. The range of Tim’s projects is extensive, from highways to high rise, oil rigs and suspension bridges both in the UK and Overseas. These have included Canary Wharf Tower, Dartford Bridge, Marathon Brae B, Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong, and Jiang Yin bridge in the PRC. Tim is passionate about engineering and construction and is currently Chairman of the BCSA’s Bridgework Committee.
