Technical Group Webinar

JOIN OUR STRUCTURES AND INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNICAL GROUP (TG1) FOR THEIR FIRST BACK-TO-BASICS WEBINAR

Poor welded joint design and misunderstanding can result in additional cost and lower quality.

Attendees will get an insight into some of the issues associated with poor joint design, and be given guidance on:

  • how to avoid problems
  • when to question requirements
  • how to provide the best solutions

This webinar is aimed at design engineers, draughting personnel, welding engineers, inspection and testing personnel, fabrication supervisors and fabrication planners working in civil engineering, construction, typically steelwork for bridges and buildings.

This online event will be of interest to:

  • those with little or no knowledge of welding technology
  • those just entering the welding industry
  • those wanting to gain an appreciation of the subject
  • engineers who feel the need for a refresher
  • anyone with an interest in welding

There will be two presentations and ample time for questions.

  • Problems associated with poor joint design by Julian French, Partner, Sandberg LLP
  • Designing optimum joints for welding by Tom Cosgrove, Consultant, Sandberg LLP

MEET OUR EXPERT SPEAKERS

Julian French, Partner, Sandberg LLP

Presentation title: Problems associated with poor joint design,

Julian has nearly 50 years of industrial experience in structural steelwork. After Head Wrightson Ltd., he joined the London based consultancy Sandberg LLP in 1975 and became a Partner in 2010, Sandberg’s 150th anniversary.

Prior to being office based, much of the first 25 years involved secondment to design consultants and certification bodies. Projects were worldwide and typically included the manufacture, installation and erection of offshore structures, bridges and buildings.

Julian sat on a number of TWI CL committees and boards prior to semi-retirement in 2021 but still assists in the preparation of a number of UK specifications and standards. Julian is now Chair of The Welding Institute  Structures and Infrastructure Technical Group.

Tom Cosgrove, Consultant, Sandberg LLP

Presentation title: Designing optimum joints for welding

Tom, a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a Welding Engineer, has a wealth of experience in steel construction. Tom has worked for steelwork contractors in Belgium, Britain and Ireland, plus The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) in Ascot and The British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) in Whitehall. Tom is employed as a consultant at Sandberg LLP with a focus on all aspects of Fabrication and Welding. Tom has an MSc / DIC in Structural Steel Design.

Tom has designed steelwork connections for stadiums, bridges and large complex building structures accounting for fabrication, welding, inspection, transportation and erection.  At the SCI Tom ran the Advisory Service which included dealing with enquires from industry addressing  all aspects of steelwork connection design and execution.  Subsequently Tom was the Convenor of the BCSA Connections Group which acted as the UK Mirror Group in relation to EN 1993-1-8. The UK Green Book Series (SCI P 358, for example) on Steelwork Connections is produced under the guidance of the BCSA Connections Group.
