Repurposing of Pipelines in the Energy Transition

This is a North Scottish Branch event run by our Branch volunteers for members of North Scottish and Highlands and Islands Branches of The Welding Institute. Other members are welcome to join us.

Overview: By most accounts, hydrogen and CCUS key components of the energy transition and the need to reach net-zero while maintaining energy security.  For economic reasons this transition to hydrogen will involve the re-use and re-purposing of existing infrastructure including pipelines.  This presentation will cover some of the key integrity challenges and differences between hydrogen, CO2 and hydrocarbon pipelines, and outline a pragmatic phased approach to enable safe and economic conversion

Speaker: Neil Gallon (Principal Engineer, Rosen)

Speaker Biography: Neil Gallon is a Principal Engineer with the ROSEN Group in Newcastle upon Tyne, having previously worked for various consulting and manufacturing companies, including British Steel / Tata Steel and GE Wellstream. He holds a masters degree from the University of Cambridge in Materials Science and Metallurgy. Neil has 25 years’ experience in materials and welding engineering, and is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, a Eur. Ing. and a European / International Welding Engineer. His current work concentrates on understanding the effects of gaseous hydrogen on steel properties.
