Technical Group Webinar

A STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY TECHNICAL GROUP (TG6) WEBINAR

Academic research has always been important to industry – especially with regard to factors like asset management, lifecycle assessments, and for combatting materials and environmental problems including stress, materials corrosion, hydrogen embrittlement, fracture mechanics, and more.

Research has allowed us a better understanding of how materials and structures are impacted by different operating conditions, providing asset owners scientifically proven methods for monitoring, measuring, and mitigating against problems.

Structural integrity findings from academia have been used in industry sectors ranging from chemicals and oil and gas through to power generation and renewables.

The creation of the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) in 2012, supported by government funding, the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and BP sponsorship, has continued this tradition, delivering innovative new research to industry through partnerships between TWI Ltd, Brunel University and 35 other affiliated universities.

JOIN OUR STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY TECHNICAL GROUP (TG6) WEBINAR

This webinar will illustrate how NSIRC has contributed to industry with presentations from current students and Alumni.

Who should attend?

Academics and engineers who are interested to find out how academic research can contribute to structural integrity which is increasingly used  by many industry sectors such as transportation, power generation, oil and gas, renewables, and chemicals.

Programme:

  • What is NSIRC? by Hannah Stedman, NSIRC Operations Project Leader, TWI Ltd

  • Using a Constraint Loss Approach to Assess Notch Fracture Toughness by Oliver Logan, ECA Engineer, Subsea 7, University of Bristol

  • Improving reliability assessment of offshore structures using Bayesian methods by Hadi Khalili, Senior Structural Engineer, Aker Solutions Ltd.

  • Characterization and Early Detection of Hydrogen Embrittlement in Offshore Bolts using Acoustic Emission by Nokhaiz Sabir, PhD Student, University of Warwick and TWI Ltd

  • Probabilistic methods for treatment of welding residual stress in integrity assessments by Matthew Weltevreden, PhD student, TWI Ltd/University of Bristol

  • Development of Novel Coating Systems for Mitigating Corrosion of Offshore Wind Turbines by Adamantini Loukodimou, PhD Student, University of Leicester and NSIRC

MEET OUR SPEAKERS

HANNAH STEDMAN

Presentation title: What is NSIRC?

Hannah started her career with TWI and NSIRC in 2019. She manages the recruitment process for all PhD students in to the Centre, supports the students on a day to day basis with anything from Conference approvals to Lab Inductions and is responsible for managing relationships with key personnel within Universities and our major grant holders.

OLIVER LOGAN

Presentation title: Using a Constraint Loss Approach to Assess Notch Fracture Toughness

Oliver is an Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) Engineer for Subsea 7. His research has focused on materials and structure integrity, concentrating on the effects on non-sharp defects in a fracture toughness assessment.

HADI KHALILI BEng MSc PhD MWeldI IEng

Presentation title: Improving Reliability Assessment of Offshore Structures using Bayesian Methods

Hadi joined NSIRC in 2017 to develop his study at PhD level. His PhD was about improving the reliability assessment of offshore structures using Bayesian methods to incorporate new information. He achieved his PhD in Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering from the University of Strathclyde in 2022.

Hadi joined TWI Ltd in June 2020 as a Project Leader in the Asset Integrity Management (AIM) section. Hadi is a structural engineer with seven years of experience in the design and assessment of offshore assets. He recently joined Aker Solutions as a Senior Structural Engineer.

NOKHAIZ SABIR

Presentation title: Characterization and Early Detection of Hydrogen Embrittlement in Offshore Bolts using Acoustic Emission

A second year Ph.D. student at NSIRC, Nokhaiz has registered with the Department of Engineering at University of Warwick, and is currently on a funded PhD studentship in partnership with Lloyd’s Register Foundation, TWI Ltd and University of Warwick. She also works as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at University of Warwick and support the academics with teaching engineering undergraduate students.

Prior to starting her PhD, she completed an MSc in Oil and Gas Engineering at Brunel University which was also in partnership with TWI Ltd. She was a recipient of the NSIRC Scholarship as well as the Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship in recognition of academic achievements. Nokhaiz’s first degree is BSc in Chemical Engineering from University of Lancaster which was completed with First Class Honours.

MATTHEW WELTEVREDEN

Presentation title: Probabilistic Methods for Treatment of Welding Residual Stress in Integrity Assessments

Matthew is in the final year of his PhD at the University of Bristol, his project focusses on pipe girth weld residual stress treatment in integrity assessments with specific interest of probabilistic methods.

ADAMANTINI LOUKODIMOU

Presentation title: Development of Novel Coating Systems for Mitigating Corrosion of Offshore Wind Turbines

Adamantini graduated from the University of Patras, Greece with a Degree in Chemistry in 2016 and later she undertook an MSc in Synthetic Chemistry and Advanced Polymeric and Nanostructured Materials, graduating in 2018.

She was sponsored by Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) in 2018 to carry out a PhD with the University of Leicester while being based at the National Structural Research Centre (NSIRC) at TWI Ltd. This programme is in collaboration with Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre for Doctoral Training in Innovative Metal Processing (IMPaCT). Her PhD research focuses on the development of novel corrosion resistant coatings.
