Heat Treatment of Steels

This is an Eastern Counties Branch event organised and hosted by the Branch Committee on behalf of Branch members. Other members and non-members are very welcome to register for the talk. 

Overview: Heat treatments of steels, both before and after welding are critical in the fabrication of steel components. The manner in which they are undertaken, as well as monitoring and understanding what is happening during different types of heat treatment and why we do each type help us to understand how the steel will behave and what can go wrong.

The Speaker: Joanna Nicholas, TWI

Speaker Biography: Joanna Nicholas obtained her degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Wales, University College Swansea in 1999. 

She joined TWI in the same year, and has been involved in research, materials selection and failure investigations. Joanna has broad knowledge of ferritic steels with particular emphasis on hydrogen cracking and hydrogen diffusion, HAZ hardness, mooring chain, fasteners, in-service welding and 9% Ni steels.
