London Branch Technical Talk

This is a London and Kent Branch event organised and run by our London  Branch for  our members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview:- We rely on our infrastructure to provide us with hot water, gas and oil. Often we are only aware of how important these services are to us when we notice a problem or a leak. This can be just as difficult for a homeowner dealing with water streaming through their kitchen ceiling, or a refinery finding steam piping leaks. When the leak involves flammable hydrocarbons; gas or oil leaking from either domestic or industrial pipework, the risk of fire and explosion makes the potential for damage and casualties so much worse. In this talk, Dr Philippa Moore will reflect on some of the common themes that can lead to leaks and failures, from high integrity industrial sites to the pipework in your home airing cupboard.

Speaker:- Dr Philippa Moore (Hawkins)

Speaker Biography:- Dr Philippa Moore studied materials science and metallurgy at the University of Cambridge. She then worked at TWI for 18 years on consultancy and research related to welded steel structures and their failure modes, in particular brittle fracture. She has been a member of the Welding Institute for her whole career, and in the past has chaired the Younger Member Committee, and The Tipper Group. She has been a lecturer for the IIW welding diploma, and given guest lectures for graduate courses at Cambridge University and Cranfield University. Since 2022 she has worked as a forensic investigator at Hawkins and Associates in Cambridge, where her cases can cover issues as diverse as escape of water claims, cracks in glass, product and engineering failures.
