Technical Group Webinar
JOIN OUR STRUCTURES AND INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNICAL GROUP (TG1) WEBINAR
Who should attend?
Designers, Construction Engineers, Fabrication Managers (of all levels) and Site Supervisors.
What will you learn?
Attendees will gain an understanding of the latest developments in the reuse of structural steel and the considerations to be taken into account when working with historic steel. They will get advice on what to look out for and steps that can be taken to mitigate some of the associated welding risks.
Experts from industry will be presenting on a range of topics:
- Roy Fishwick, MD, Cleveland Steel & Tubes Ltd on Practicalities of Sourcing Steel for Reuse
- Tom Cosgrove, Consultant, Sandberg LLP on Welding of Historic Steelwork
- David Brown, Technical Specialist, Steel Construction Institute on Reuse of Structural Steel
- Ashfaq Khokhar, Associate Manager Metallurgy Laboratory, Sandberg LLP on Determination of Mechanical Properties and Weldability

MEET OUR EXPERTS
DAVID BROWN
Reuse of Structural Steel
David was one of the authors of SCI publication P427, presenting a protocol for the reuse of steel sections used in construction. More recently, David wrote SCI publication P440, extending the guidance to steel originally used in construction since 1930.
ASHFAQ KHOKHAR
Determination of Mechanical Properties and Weldability
Ashfaq is a Metallurgist and Chartered Engineer with experience in heat treatment, optical microscopy, mechanical testing and failure investigations. Experience on failure investigations include parent metal (ferrous and non-ferrous) and weld failure from the marine, oil and gas, chemical, automotive, power generation and construction industries. Ashfaq joined Sandberg LLP in April 2021 after leaving TWI Ltd, where he was a project leader in the Materials department. Ashfaq has gained a wide experience in metallurgy, having worked on arc, friction, laser, electron beam welding projects and failure investigations.
TOM COSGROVE
Welding of Historic Steel
Tom Cosgrove, a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a Welding Engineer, has a wealth of experience in steel construction. Tom has worked for steelwork contractors in Belgium, Britain and Ireland, plus The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) in Ascot and The British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) in Whitehall, London. Tom is a consultant at Sandberg LLP focusing on all aspects of Fabrication and Welding. Tom has an MSc/DIC in Structural Steel Design and has worked on many steelwork refurbishment projects over the years.
ROY FISHWICK
Practical Aspects of Steel Reuse
He has spent the last 12 years lobbying about steel reuse due to EN1090. He is also chair of BCSA Sustainability Committee and they have sponsored P427 and P440 reuse protocols. They have 2000 of reused inventory. Roy is also a qualified RWC.
