East Midlands Branch Technical Talk

This is an East Midlands Branch event organised and run by our East Midlands for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview: In this talk, Brian will provide an overview of the national rail network and the challenges faced in managing a safety, reliability and efficiency with a more detailed review of rail inspection, defect management and in particular the joining, repairing and resurfacing of rail using a range of welding techniques. 

Speaker:  Brian Whitney Engineering Expert (Track) Network Rail

Speaker Biography: Brian has a Materials Science degree and started his working life in advanced composite design and manufacture utilising filament winding to produce specialist aerospace and components at Royal Ordnance / British Aerospace before spending 10 years in consultancy at Sandberg LLP in London carrying out testing and inspection of a wide range of transport and construction projects across the world. He joined Railtrack / Network Rail in 2000 just before the Hatfield accident as a metallurgist and have held many positions covering all aspects of rail management from manufacture, inspection and testing, welding, metallurgy, grinding and lubrication and renewal. Brian has written a number of key asset management standards and led the introduction of train based rail inspection. He is currently based in Milton Keynes in Network Rail's Technical Authority providing expert guidance and input to a wide range of track and switches & crossing challenges. In summary Rocket Scientist to Railway Engineer in 35 Years.
