Australian Branch – Technical Talk

This is an Australian Branch event organised by our Australian Branch volunteers. All members based in Australia are invited to join our meetings and technical talks.  (If you would like to join our group, please get in touch!)

Overview: In this presentation, John Norrish will outline various approaches for quality control for wire arc additive manufacturing based on many years experience and research.

Speaker: Emeritus Professor John Norrish

Speaker Biography: Professor Norrish has more than 50 years involvement with welding engineering in industry and academic research. He worked for BOC for 15 years in the UK and was seconded to Queensland for 3 years in 1981 in the role of consultant welding engineer for CIG’s clients. On returning to the UK he headed the welding group at Cranfield University before being appointed to the position of CRC chair of Materials Welding and Joining at the University of Wollongong in 1995.

He has a special interest in arc welding process monitoring and control, metal transfer phenomena, additive manufacturing, and health and safety in welding operations. He was involved in the original development of advanced welding systems and programmable process control. He was also the instigator of robotic wire arc additive manufacturing in the 1990’s.

He is former vice chair of the International Institute of Welding (IIW), commission XII and study group 212 and sits on the editorial board of the IIW journal, Welding in the World. He is a chartered engineer, Eur.Ing, Fellow of the Welding Institute, Honorary Fellow of the International Welding Institute and the American Welding Society. He was a founding board member of DMTC and an honorary fellow of this organisation.

John has more than two hundred publications in refereed journals and international conferences.

He is also the author of a Book - Advanced Welding Processes, originally published by The Institute of Physics in 1992 and revised and republished by Woodhead Publishing in 2006

Although formally retired from UOW in 2012 he became an Emeritus Professor and continues to be involved in research activities of the facility for intelligent fabrication (FIF) at UOW.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attending this event supports your professional development.  You can claim 2 CPD points per hour for this event.  As a member of the Welding Institute you can record your CPD activity online from your membership portal.
