Overview: Built in 1887, Hammersmith Bridge is a grade II* listed chain suspension bridge, crossing the River Thames in West London. Significant restrictions have been imposed on the bridge in recent years after seizing of the 137-year old roller bearings has led to fractures in the cast iron support structures carrying the main suspension system. Replacing the seized bearings and remediating the critical defects presented a significant challenge. This talk will discuss the unique problems presented by the structure, and how these challenges were overcome with a suite of innovative solutions, including the implementation of new complex fabricated steel strengthening, bespoke jacking systems, novel construction processes and materials.

Speakers: Rufus Foster and Tim Abbott (Mott MacDonald)

Speaker Biographies: Rufus Foster is an Associate Structural Engineer within the Mott MacDonald bridges and civil structures practice, specialising in the design and assessment of steel bridges. He has worked on a variety of projects including the signature Network Arch bridge of the Ordsall Chord in Manchester.

Tim Abbott is a project director and the bridges and civil structures practice lead within the transportation unit of Mott MacDonald. With over 30 years’ experience in the inspection, assessment, design, fabrication and construction of bridges, he has a focus on steels and metals, and particularly on the evaluation, refurbishment and strengthening of historic bridges.
