London and Kent Branch Event

Chek Lap Kok international airport in Hong Kong, built in mid 1990s, is a massive building involving ca 20,000 tonne of structural steelwork. The structure is a dia-grid comprising 123 modules each constructed from 4 steel plate girders arranged in a 45° star-shaped pattern connected to a central division plate. During routine NDE this central division plate revealed a deep central crack which Professor Michael Burdekin diagnosed as centre-line segregation cracking (CSC).

The talk tells us how the CSC was discovered, its frequency of occurrence and how the cracks were tested and repaired (using fracture mechanics as a basis) working in conjunction with the designer. The speaker will also show how CSC is incorporated into HK’s Structural Steelwork Code and how this phenomenon re-occurred again in HK’s High-Speed rail terminus building in West Kowloon

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING THIS EVENT
  • Information transfer from experts
  • Discussion, questions and answers on the specific topics
  • A broader understanding of CSC and how it can be tested and repaired
  • Attendance of this event qualifies for CPD
CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Welding Institute awards points towards CPD for delegates attending this webinar. Every hour attendance of an event will earn 2 points towards your continuing professional development.

MEET THE SPEAKER: Bill Frankland FREng, CEng, FICE, FHKIE

Bill Frankland is a Chartered Civil Engineer involved in the design and construction of structural steelwork for bridges, offshore structures, airports and sports venues. For the last 10 years he has been an expert witness involved in disputes concerning offshore structures, solar tower, coal-fired power stations, conference venues and LNG plants across the world. He has been involved in many issues relating to the welded joints of these steel structures and in this talk will all present the occurrence of centre-line segregation found on Hong Kong’s massive new airport building in 1995..
