Metallic Materials Technical Group (TG3) |
The Metallic Materials Technical Group meetings cover topics including metals; non-ferrous metals; advanced materials (e.g. intermetallic and composites); plastics and ceramics; mechanical properties in metallic and non-metallic joints; service behaviour of components joined by welding or other means; defect mechanisms and weldability testing; metallurgical aspects of filler materials; metallurgy of welding tube and pipe; health and safety; computer software and tools; national and international standards; quality control and IIW activities related to metallurgy.
Meet the TG3 Chair Robert Shaw CEng, CSWIP 3.1, IWE, MSc, MWeldI As one of TWI's arc-focused Welding Engineers, Rob has spent more than a decade developing, qualifying, and implementing welding processes and procedures for a range of companies in the nuclear, aerospace and defence industries. A metallurgist by training, Rob has maintained an interest in the welding of more uncommon metals, including working with copper, titanium, and nickel alloys. This has included work on the production of new turbine blade alloys, and the complex safe end transition joints for nuclear power plants, as well as the more common steels for oil and gas or pressure vessel applications. He has a particular interest in the current mechanisation/automation of the welding industry, and the application of new equipment and techniques being used to reduce the impact of the ongoing manual welding skills gap. |
