Corrosion Engineering Courses - Career Development for Corrosion Engineers

Career progression for engineers, including corrosion engineers, as a Member of The Welding Institute is eased through the membership benefits such as a 5% discount on TWI Training and Examinations courses.

Take a look at our Insight 'What is Corrosion? - A Definitive Guide' to find out more about corrosion.

Why is learning about corrosion important?

Corrosion detection and quantification is essential for many sectors of industry, especially the oil and gas industry. Processing plant and offshore facility operators need to be able to make informed decisions when considering maintenance schedules, condition monitoring, and engineering critical assessments determining life extension and reduction decisions. TWI Training and Examinations offers corrosion focussed training including two corrosion awareness courses that provide candidates with crucial skills in corrosion inspection that will benefit your career prospects in engineering.

The first one ‘Corrosion Awareness: Conventional Ultrasonic Inspection,’ will equip candidates with a comprehensive overview of all of the issues surrounding corrosion, from identification and scientific background to effective inspection and control.

The second course, ‘Corrosion Awareness: Advanced Ultrasonic Inspection,’ will expand on the content of the ‘Conventional Ultrasonic Inspection’ course and introduce phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) corrosion mapping and analysis, to provide an even more thorough understanding of corrosion inspection, quantification and monitoring.

These courses have been designed to help engineers who deal with corrosion and its impacts. They are ideal for level 2 ultrasonic inspectors, those who wish to build on existing knowledge of plant inspection, those who interface with NDT inspectors and anyone wishing to increase their understanding of corrosion and its detrimental effect on materials. Both courses are backed by internationally recognised CSWIP Certification, providing qualifications respected throughout industry. The courses will last five days and are available at a number of TWI’s international training centres.

Another course which TWI Training and Examination offers and is relevant to corrosion engineers includes the course ‘BGAS-CSWIP Site Coatings Inspector.’ The course covers the topic of cathodic protection which is a key method of corrosion protection.

TWI Training and Examination also offers a range of Cathodic Protection courses including:

In addition to the above courses, TWI Training and Examinations also offers the CSWIP Plant Inspection Programme

As a corrosion engineer it is important to continue to professionally and personally develop your knowledge to keep your career and interest within the topic relevant and captivating. As part of the Plant Inspection programme, some modules will be of interest to materials and corrosion engineers.

As a CSWIP Plant Inspector, you will work on monitoring integrity and corrosion activities at a plant. The Plant Inspection courses relevant to corrosion are as follows:

Once you have acquired CSWIP Plant Inspector Level 1, you will be able to enrol on levels 2 and 3:

Why should you enrol on these training courses?

Upon successful completion of four CSWIP modules, CSWIP Plant Inspection Level 2 is awarded. With the successful completion of six CSWIP modules, CSWIP Plant Inspection Level 3 is awarded. You may also be eligible for Professional Membership of The Welding Institute at Technician Level (TechWeldI).

In addition you can benefit from Continuous Professional Develop (CPD) by attending TWI Training courses. Those courses including examinations are worth 2 CPD points per hour and courses without examinations count as 1 CPD point per hour. Another benefit of attending these courses includes the opportunity to network at events, gaining important contacts and information.

Whatever your chosen engineering career path is, The Welding Institute can support you! Find out more about our membership benefits.
