This is a West Midlands Branch event organised and run by the West Midlands Branch Committee on behalf of Branch members. Other members and non-members are very welcome to register for this talk. .
Overview: Tanks were originally developed as ‘armoured landships’ to try and break the stalemate of trench warfare in WW1. Since then they have developed rapidly, combining the three principle concepts of Firepower, Mobility and Protection. This talk will examine that ‘Iron Triangle’, looking at the interplay of technology and tactics which led to very different tank designs entering service with different armies, and consider if the latest developments in anti-tank systems – widely seen in Ukraine – have now rendered the tank obsolete.
Speaker: Steve Cater (TWI Ltd)
Speaker Biographies: Steve is responsible for research into the friction stir welding (FSW) of both thick section light metal alloys such as aluminium and magnesium, and high plasticisation point materials such as steel, titanium and nickel-based alloys. A metallurgist by training, and winner of the Richard Weck Award for his work on steel, Stephen led TWI’s Core Research Programme (CRP) into the development of FSW for steel, and also led the welding elements of two recent projects looking at steel FSW for marine construction.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attending this event supports your professional development. You can claim 2 CPD points per hour for this event. As a member of the Welding Institute you can record your CPD activity online from your membership portal.
