Technical Group Webinar
JOIN OUR WELDING AND JOINING PROCESSES AND NDT AND CONDITION MONITORING TECHNICAL GROUPS (TG2/TG8)
The seminar will cover the latest advances in additive manufacture. Leading experts from industry and academia will make presentations on how AM can provide high integrity 3D printed components. 3D printing allied with AM enables complex shape components to be produced in a very short timescale. Rapid prototyping, manufacture of otherwise long-lead items such as forgings or castings and repair of in-service components are all possible in a timely and cost effective way.

MEET OUR EXPERTS
Dr FILOMENO MARTINA
Large format metal 3D printing via an integrated Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing ecosystem
Dr Filomeno Martina is the CEO of WAAM3D Ltd, a spin-out company of Cranfield University commercialising the Wire+Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process. Prior to this, he was Senior Lecturer in Additive Manufacturing at the Welding Engineering and Laser Processing Centre, Cranfield University, where he was the course director of the first MSc on Metal Additive Manufacturing in Europe. He is member of ISO/TC 261/JWG 5, BSI PAS 6010, 6011 and 6012, and AMS7002A.
He received his PhD in Additive Manufacturing from Cranfield University in 2014; the main focus of his doctoral research was the manipulation of geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties of large WAAM titanium deposits. Previously he earned an MSc also from Cranfield and an MEng in Industrial and Management Engineering from Polytechnic of Bari (Italy). He is the winner of the 2022 FAME Jr award, and has received further awards from BAE Systems (2010, 2018), Royal Aeronautical Society (2013), European Space Agency (2015), and The Welding Institute (2018). He counts >50 publications to his name since 2013.
MARCELLO CONSONNI
AM in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
Marcello has been a contributing Member to the ASME committee on Welding & Brazing (BPV IX) since 2009 and Member of the ASME III UK International Working Group.
His presentation will provide a summary of recent additions and changes to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), to address the application of Additive Manufacturing, particularly with regard to Wire-Arc AM (WAAM).
The audience will gain up-to-date information with regard to the qualification and application of Additive Manufacturing and in particular Wire-Arc AM (WAAM) according to the latest Edition of the ASME BPVC.
PROFESSOR SUPRIYO GANGULY
Research Review on Fatigue Crack Propagation of Wire Plus Arc Additive Manufactured Steel Components Under Different Service Conditions
Supriyo is a metallurgist, and currently his research interest focuses on understanding the integrity of structural and functional alloy deposits during metal additive manufacturing and welding. Welding, repair welding and additive manufacturing are the vital technologies being researched for sustainable manufacturing. However, the thermal energy deployed would result in creation of a dendritic microstructure with variably distributed residual stress field.
Supriyo focuses on understanding the underpinning mechanism of microstructure and stress development during manufacturing of an alloy and how to mitigate them to improve integrity and performance under critical and complex service environment.
DR MARIO CORDERO
Fundamental principles in the design of cored-wire consumables for additive manufacturing
Mario is BEng, MPhil, PhD, CEng, FWeldI, IWE/EWF and has more that 30 years working experience in areas as diverse as electroceramics, photoceramics, superconductors, materials science metrology, and welding engineering.
The latest part of his career deals with applied innovation, research and development in welding engineering and related disciplines, especially in development of novel products and services on heavy engineering, some of which have successfully been transferred to commercial applications.
The presentation will cover: Overview on the manufacturing of cored wires; diagrams of multiparametric relationship of factors influencing the characteristics of welding consumables. Selected case studies showing the influence of cored wire design on the properties of the weld. One case study of the additive manufacturing of a Pelton turbine. Conclusions showing the huge potential of cored wires for additive manufacturing and other technologies.
PROFESSOR STEWART WILLIAMS
Progress towards a new physics-based qualification approach for additively manufactured engineering structures
Stewart has been leading a programme at Cranfield University for large scale additive manufacture for critical engineering structures for nearly 20 years.
His presentation will cover a brief introduction to the status of the additive manufacturing of large-scale pressure vessels, demonstrating that most manufacturing challenges have been overcome. The main remaining challenge facing additive manufacturing is the very high cost, long time scale and inflexibility of the current qualification method. Stewart has been working to a digital rapid low-cost flexible solution based on process physics and monitoring. He will present the progress towards this and the plans going forward to make this a reality.
DR FLORE VILLARET
Manufacturing and characterizing an industrial multi material WAAM demonstrator for hydropower energy applications
Flore is a research engineer at EDF R&D since 2020, working on additive manufacturing and welding metallurgy for energy application. Before that, she defended a PhD about additive manufacturing of graded metallic part for nuclear applications.
The presentation will show a potential application of wire arc additive manufacturing for building multi-materials hydraulic parts, developed in the framework of the EU project Grade2XL.
