Teesside Branch Technical Talk

This is a Teesside Branch event organised and run by the Teesside Branch Committee on behalf of Branch members. Other members and non-members are very welcome to register for this talk. .

Overview: This remarkable wrought iron suspension bridge, built in 1820 has recently celebrated its 200th birthday. At the time of construction, it was the first suspension bridge in Europe to carry wheeled traffic. The bridge received little maintenance until the 1970’s and in 2019 a major refurbishment of the bridge including the anchorages, towers, deck and chain/hanger system was carried out. This presentation gives a brief history of the bridge and summarises some of the technical challenges of refurbishment of a grade 1 listed structure joining England to Scotland.
